West Waterford Autograss Ltd

wwautograss.jpgThe most exciting motorsport experience in the South of Ireland.

Autograss is an oval based off road motorsport. Specific to the United Kingdom and Ireland, it is enjoyed every weekend during summer by many competitors and spectators. The cars used to race range from Austin Minis to purpose built vehicles using 5.7litre V8 engines. Building a car can be as cheap or as expensive as you want. With the cost of racing starting around €400 per season it is real grass roots motorsport.

Autograss is a great spectator sport, lots of overtaking on a slippery surface and a great day out for all the family.

West Waterford Autograss was formed in late 1990 and was initially known as West Waterford Motorsport, for the next 6 years promoted hot rod racing. The first race meeting took place on the lands of Mr John Devine, Baqllysaggart that November in which about 7 cars were present; one that stood out was the Opel Ascona 400 look-a-like belonging to current class 3 driver Mike Whelan.

However the event was abandoned because the field became too wet. The idea of a racing club was the brainchild of Tommy Lawless and with the help of members from Lismore, Ballysaggart, Knockanore and surrounding areas the club hosted many successful events all around the West Waterford area by kind permission of land owners and generous sponsors. The real success of West Waterford is its hard working members and skilful drivers. The club joined the Hot Rod Federation in late 1992 which brought All-Ireland success over the next few years.

The big change came in 1997 when the club joined the National Autograss Sport Association Ltd, the ground work to have this come about started on the 23/10/95 and with the strong spirit of the club no challenge was too big. The first NASA event was held on the lands of Mike Farrell, Lismore and was attended by DA1 Cavan Ferrie all the way from Co. Down. NASA racing enabled the club to extend and facilitate drivers from 12years upwards. It also meant a permanent venue to provide a safer venue to race on and to spectate.

The new breed of monsters is the single seater specials, which provide the thrills and spills of modern motor racing. From this venue in Lismore the club then moved to Ballysaggart and firstly to the land of Liam Prendergast for a year and then on to our present venue which has proved a great success. Along with this success the club was renamed for the year 2000 and is now known as West Waterford Autograss.

As we head into another season of racing our future depends on the continuing hard work of all our members, land owners, sponsors and supporters, but most of all, our junior drivers to keep the strong spirit of the club alive.
